You've probably seen beautiful photos of the sensuously sculpted frozen sand hills. These formations called "The Waves" "The Sands of Time" or North Coyote Buttes. It is actually located in the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness area, Utah-Arizona border. The number of people allowed into the area is strictly limited. Details on how to apply for the permit are given at Paria Canyon-Coyote Buttes
If you are just photographers, not experienced hikers, I do not recommend you to solo hiking in this area, especially hiking at late evening or dark night. You should be accompanied in a group with an experienced leader.
I am not an experienced hiker by myself, just an abstract photography and nature lover. I have put my own life at risk when I decided to hike this area alone. In middle of December 2004, I was waiting for the last light stroke into the beautiful “S” curve buttes that had a very low light angle and strong shadow at ribs, successfully shot several rolls of 120 mm films. It was very difficult to find the way out although I had practiced using topography maps and compass pretty well…I was walking all night long in the dark and cold for twelve hours with the help of my Guardian Angel to reach destination next early morning.
“Golden Waves” was named to this photo by me, not only for it's brilliant golden color, but the dues of love for nature and photography.
If you ever want to go hiking or take photograph in this area first time and need information, please feel free to ask, I am more than happy to help you all.
